Get to know Todd Starr,  the Team Atlanta Delegation Head and long-time JCC Maccabi Games® volunteer.

With eight years experience with the Games, originally starting as a coach, we sat down with him for an insider’s look at the organization and how it has impacted him over the years. When did you first start playing and volunteering for the Maccabi games?

Todd Star: I started up with the JCC Maccabi Games® as an athlete in 1985 playing baseball and competing in sailing for Detroit. Since then, I have volunteered with the Team Atlanta organization for eight years. I started as a 15/16-year-old baseball coach in 2010 and have coached that age group in baseball every year since.

Now I have taken a larger leadership role and coach when the opportunity is available.

ATL: What about the Games keep you coming back?

TS: As an athlete it was meeting people from all over the country. I tried to get a jersey from every city at the games. As a coach and now parent, it’s watching the athletes go through what I treasured so much as an athlete. The thrill of competition and enjoyment of making new friends is always a highlight of each and every games.

ATL: What is your favorite memory as a player and a coach?

TS: My favorite memory as a player was playing multiple sports in one week of Games. Back then it was allowed, but not now. I got silver in a sailing race and won the bronze in baseball! My cousin and I finished 1 and 2. The course was so difficult we were the only two who figured it out (it’s a good thing I followed him)!

As a coach you’d think a loss wouldn’t be on here. In Texas my baseball team was involved in an 11-inning Gold Medal game. Unfortunately we lost, but the fight the guys showed was incredible to watch.

ATL: How excited are you for Atlanta to host the 2019 games?

TS: I am BEYOND EXCITED! We have so many phenomenal people pouring their heart and soul into making these Games the best ones yet.

If you’re interested in joining Team Atlanta as a coach, we have team and individual sports that are in need of coaches and assistant coaches. Coaches are the first people our athletes come in contact with on their JCC Maccabi Games journey and coaches make a huge impact on the lives of these kids both on and off the field.

There are plenty of opportunities across all 13 JCC Maccabi Games sports: basketball, golf, ultimate frisbee, flag football, volleyball, soccer, tennis, swimming, table tennis, baseball, dance, track and field, and bowling.
